If nowhere is a place then this might be it.The paradox of a destination that is always there but unknown until you stumble upon it, like retrieving a forgotten memory or spotting a familiar face in a crowd, is captured in Design Workshop's beach house in East London, South Africa. Square and hard-edged, the building is at once an instrument for viewing the landscape, to which it opens, and a secret box closed against the conspicuous natural beauty around it. In this ongoing exchange, between open and closed, outside and inside, the architecture achieves the making of a place. And this play of opposites is most clearly expressed as a contest between nature and art.
