摘要

As part of Tallinn's hosting of the 2011 European Capital of Culture, architects and designers were invited to create a series of temporary installations across the city. Deep in Kadriorg Park, Japanese architect Tetsuo Kondo fabricated a looping steel walkway that scrolls and spirals up into the tree canopy. Affording a new and elevated perspective of the park, the 95m-long structure is entirely column-free, supported instead by brackets fixed to tree trunks. Kondo constructed a similar curving walkway in the sheds of the Arsenale for last year's Venice Biennale (AR October 2010). Here he employs the same formal principles and lightness of touch to commune elegantly and effortlessly with nature. The jury were seduced by Kondo's approach and how his manmade element enhances the experience of the natural world.
