To maximise farming productivity in the '60s, West Jutland's Eiver Skjern was straightened and embanked, with five pumping stations set up to regulate water levels. But 30 years ago, the Danish government decided to return the river valley to its original condition, restoring local wildlife and encouraging visitors to explore the area. 'The countryside is at the frontline of transformation', wrote Rem Koolhaas, arguing that 'we cannot understand the city without understanding the countryside'.
