The coloniality of planting

Botany, or the practice of botany, might at first appear to be a passive, peaceful, or even benign activity. But in fact, it was a practice absolutely integral to the expansion of empire. As a scientific discipline, botany emerged as a consequence of the exploratory voyages that European colonial powers sent around the world; in a sense, botanists became agents of empire.
