last month, Australia's Pritzker Architecture Prize laureate, Glenn Murcutt, marked another milestone in his 50-year career: his 2,500-square-foot MPavilion opened to the public on November 14 in Melbourne's Queen Victoria Gardens. Inspired by his memories of resting in the shade of a small airplane's fabric-covered wing, Murcutt designed a steel-framed structure topped with a seemingly aeronautical white canopy: curved trusses wrapped in a translucent tensile fabric form the roof, from which panels of a synthetic material used in aircraft are hung, creating the 8-foot-high ceiling. At night, concealed LEDs illuminate the canopy, which Murcutt describes as "a lantern in the Queen Victoria Gardens, giving the pavilion a feeling of lightness."
