HOUSE IN CHIKUSEI

This is a project to take apart a warehouse about 90 years old, move it to a new property, and redesign it as a residence. The project reused materials from the old warehouse and the main building on its original site. Using the warehouse's wooden frame, and gradually drawing in the outside with the terrace and veranda, as well as extending the interior with the construction of a new lean-to roof, the design complicated the boundaries between inside and out despite being separated by a wall. Old post and beam wooden structure was constructed along regional industry and local materials, conventional technique. It brings different rationality from modern criterion, and it works effectively to lengthen the life of the building. According to the norm of modern, to design this kind of building which includes a lot of surplus is not allowed. But, I think we are facing the time to reevaluation such surplus, and we have to have the courage to step from the modern norm.
