Intelligent building paradigm and data-driven models of innovation

The AEC industry is going through one of the largest and most disruptive transformations in history, from being a document-based sector to evolving into an information-based system of interconnected tools, processes, and activities. This special issue focuses on the transformational potential of 'embedding intelligence' into data-driven building design that results in fundamentally new product, process, business and operational innovations. A diverse range of practice-based, applied and theoretical articles have been included in this issue. Each article provides critical insight into the process of embedding intelligence into the different stages of a project life-cycle, contextualised in different use-case scenarios. Contributions range from real-time integrated simulations of building systems and their performances, collation of design and operational data for knowledge discovery, design of decision-making frameworks for conflict resolution and adaptive re-use and sharing of design codes and algorithms. Collectively, the articles challenge much of our earlier metrics, values, assumptions and modes of thinking, while exploring opportunities for more agile and adaptive solutions for the future.
