Objectile's aim is to develop procedures, both software and hardware, that will make digital architecture a reality at an affordable cost for small architectural practices and the average consumer. After an initial series of experiments at the scale of objects, furniture and sculpture, Objectile developed a series of timber decorative panels that are basic building components. The firm now focuses on small-scale architecture where current state-of-the-art software is just starting to make it possible to contemplate a fully digital architecture. The Semper Pavilion presented at Archilab (1999) in Orleans, France, was the first piece of digital architecture where everything from design procedures to manufacturing process was generated on the same software platform. Complex interlacings and undulating surfaces were algorithmically generated and then manufactured on a numerical command router right to the very last detail: for example the control of the tool path that creates texture on the surfaces. But such a small piece of architecture required two months' work for the office.
