THE URBAN COMPLEX

Cities are intrinsically complex. Attempts to model, understand and ultimately shape these complex systems has been of intense interest to architects and urban planners since the 1950s, taking on a new urgency in light of the massive urban changes and projects being developed in the emerging economies of the world. The often quoted statistic that the planet is now more urban than rural has lent force to the intensity of this focus, having the masters studios of the architectural academies scrambling to all corners of the world, motivating practices to internationalise and capitalise on the new gold rush, and refocusing new technologies in design on the question of urbanism and the city.
