Nikken Sekkei is one of the world's largest architectural design firms with over 2,500 professional staff. Established in 1900, from its headquarters in Tokyo it offers comprehensive design, engineering, management, consulting, and research and development (R&D) services for the built environment. Nikken Sekkei Research Institute (NSRI) was established in 2006 as a separate entity within the Nikken Group, as a think tank providing R&D consultation relating to sustainable urban design. NSRI employs 65 personnel including urban planners, energy consultants, consulting engineers, architects and researchers. It is an influential and unique research group within Japan and has consulted on many of Nikken Sekkei's 20,000 building and urban planning projects worldwide. NSRI's research is based on the themes of city administration, environment and energy with the goal of unifying value creation, environmental load reduction and appropriate evaluation for more effective city management.
