Hannes Meyer's reductive dictum was a classic product of 1920s Modernism, an attempt to render architecture subject to the same kinds of mathematical equations that scientists appeared to be able to use to order the universe. Of course, Meyer's proposition seems naive to us now, but equally problematic today is the idea that capitalism - a sprawling economic beast that first arose in 18th-century industrial Britain, or perhaps in the financial markets of 17th-century Holland, depending on who you believe - is creating a single financial system that blankets the contemporary world.
