A major change has taken place in the construction industry in the Gulf region within the last 10 years. The speed of change, and the rate at which the Gulf has caught up with regions that were more advanced, is unprecedented. This article looks at that change process as it has occurred, with a specific focus on sustainability. Although it concentrates on information from the UAE, similar activities have also taken place elsewhere in the Gulf, and in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, some of which are also referred to below.
