There seems to be a perception that if architects are interested in social engagement and city-making, they are forced to stay on the fringes of the profession; that an interest in people and community is not compatible with an interest in power and planning; and that a choice has to be made between 'bottom up' and 'top down' approaches to urban regeneration. Architecture and urbanism practice We MadeThat does not buy into this idea. As an energetic studio with a strong public conscience, strategic thinking underpins all of its work with communities.Although the practice 'cut its teeth' on smaller-scale projects, its perspective is that the changes that most affect people's lives are not benches and planting, but big decisions about land use, housing growth and urban planning.The studio is therefore committed to bridging scales from the local to the strategic in pursuit of the best outcome for communities - an approach that reflects an interest in both ends of this urban spectrum.
