When we were invited to participate in Grocon's Carlton Brewery ideas competition, we were thankful that it was kept to a two-week schedule. We felt at a slight disadvantage however, as we don't consider ourselves to be an architectural practice with an aesthetic consistency that could easily translate to a quick, signature response. Our preference for unique and singular design results typically requires some time and a good deal of critique before they can be considered convincing. So what could we hope to achieve in two weeks? We had to be resourceful and we wanted to have a crack at every building comprising the ensemble. They were all too bristling with potential to ignore. The approach we chose was to examine each building's brief and so respond with a shameless recycling of the form, language or strategy of one of our existing projects. In this way we could illustrate what we saw to be the potential of the given envelope and location. We hadn't intended for any of these proposals to be built. Rather, we approached the competition with the intention of convincing the jury that we had something to offer the process that will unfold over the next 4+ years.
