The Cruciform at Mt Macedon Studio 101 Architects

This new home designed for a large family, is located in an established rural landscape, with a magnificent view of the mountain ranges and oversized war memorial cross atop Mt Macedon. The sizeable programmatic requirements were crafted into a linear cruciform layout maximising the northern orientation and providing four distinct zones including the garage, living area, family area and sleeping wing. With an expressed skeletal steel frame, each of the zones were wrapped in an honest palette of natural materials that included ironbark timber, copper cladding, glass and a local sandstone, which also provides for thermal mass to the internal environment. A dramatic cantilever, perpendicular to the natural landscape, enhances the sense of elevation and allows a peaceful integration and serenity with the surrounding treed landscape.
