Jack Vallentyne, the Atlas of ecosystems

I first met Jack Vallentyne at the International Society of Limnology (SIL) Congress held at the University of Manitoba, August, 1974. His reputation had preceded him. He was a disciple of G. Evelyn Hutchinson, Yale University, which meant to me that when he graduated with a Ph.D. in 1952, he was already a world-class limnologist. I learned of his many early contributions to freshwater science through his publications and from colleagues at Cornell University. Dr. Arthur Hasler, University of Wisconsin, told me that he "really regretted not having Vallentyne as a Ph.D. student."
