Richard A. Vollenweider in the 1980s at the Canada Centre for Inland Waters

The following article is a personal account of my experience as Richard Vollenweider's research assistant and doctoral student during the 1980s. His activities and interactions with others are described in order to convey his personality. Richard's personal generosity and sincere interest in science, and in others, gave lasting inspiration to his colleagues. He viewed observations in light of well developed conceptual frameworks, which gave him deep insight and an ability to see and interpret complicated relationships; this earned him the nickname "Dr. God." His work has provided clear solutions to some major environmental problems; thus he certainly left the world a better place than he found it.
