Richard Vollenweider remembered Arnold Nauwerck

When I first met Richard Vollenweider in 1955,I was a student of Wilhelm Rodhe at the Limnological Institute in Uppsala, Sweden. Rodhe had recently adopted the "~(14)C" developed by the Danish marine biologist Steeman-Nielsen for measuring the CO_2-uptake of phytoplankton to freshwater, and had carried out experiments on the vertical and temporal "primary production" in Lake Erken, some 80 kilometers east of Uppsala. Dr. Rodhe wanted to compare, in this respect, some different "classical" lakes of limnological research in Europe. Therefore, he undertook a kind of ~(14)C missionary journey to a number of institutes, from Ploen in northern Germany to Pallanza in upper Italy, where he repeated his measurements, and propagated the new method. In Pallanza he met Richard Vollenweider who, thanks to his doctoral thesis, was not unknown to him since it also discussed the same problems he was concerned with; namely, the nutrient requirements of different plankton algae. The further development of research in this field unified the interests of the two scientists. It was no problem for Rodhe to collaborate with Richard Vollenweider on a joint project in Lake Erken, and it was easy for him, at that time, to arrange for a fellowship from Sweden.
