摘要

The goal of interface science is to understand the behaviour of real materials at the level of finely divided matter or of materials with pores having at least one dimension at the nanometre scale. Such materials are ubiquitous in the natural world, and find application in many areas of industry; notably catalysis, separation and membrane science. It was realised early in investigations in this field that matter at this scale could not be expected to match idealised theories about the way in which equilibrium adsorption occurred on perfectly flatrnsurfaces. The advent and widespread availability of fast computers have reinforced the view that there is a gap between real adsorbents of experimental and industrial importance and the Platonic materials of simplified and idealised models.
