This edited collection came out of a BAAL (British Association for Applied Linguistics) seminar held in 2005, whose advertised topic was 'theoretical and methodological approaches to gender and language study'. Cumbersome though it is, the seminar title might have been a better guide to the book's contents than the title actually chosen for it: this is not a standard research methods text-there is as much about theory as methodology-and as the editors' introduction notes, it 'has approach as its organizing principle' (p. 2). There are seven sections, each representing a particular approach and containing between two and four chapters about it (there are 19 chapters in all). The approaches covered are sociolinguistics and ethnography, corpus linguistics, conversation analysis (CA), discursive psychology, critical discourse analysis (CDA), feminist poststructuralist discourse analysis, and queer theory.
