A manufacturer of self-cleaning ovens demanded that the supplier of the door-latch assembly cut its cost by 10 percent. Since the thermostatic bimetal coil element is the most expensive part of the latch, the supplier turned to Atlantic Alloys, Inc., maker of the coil element. Atlantic's assignment was to see if the cost of the latch could be reduced without changing its patented design and without sacrificing function or quality.
