Biogenic H_2SO_4 corrosion of concrete in oxygen activated sludge bioreactors

A number of activated sludge effluent treatment systems installed in Canadian pulp and paper mills are pure oxygen enclosed systems. Typically these bioreactors are constructed of pre-cast reinforced concrete wall and roof panels, columns and beams. Recently significant concrete corrosion was found in the headspace of such a bioreactor, requiring extensive and expensive repairs.
