Conventional biological wastewater treatment is not effective in treating many of the bio-recalcitrant organic compounds in bleach plant effluent. Although several physical and chemical methods have been attempted, few have been technologically feasible. The recent development of highly reactive chemical species that degrade recalcitrant molecules, however, provide new approaches to bleach plant effluent treatment. These include photocatalysis processes using low energy light with titanium dioxide as a catalyst. In this work, the degradation of effluent in a shallow pond slurry is tested on a laboratory scale.
