Innovative solutions from local engineering companies and equipment suppliers have resulted in major improvements in the quality of effluent discharged from the Norske Skog Boyer paper mill to the Derwent River near Hobart. Soon after the mill's new secondary treatment plant began operating in late 2007 it was achieving up to 80 per cent reduction of soluble and colloidal material in the effluent, and greater than 90 per cent reduction of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). Since then, according to mill sources, these figures have been sustained or further improved. Essential to the project was ingenious engineering applied by CST Wastewater Solutions (formerly Contra-Shear Technology) in partnership with equipment manufacturer Smith & Loveless, who together designed, installed and commissioned a 48 metre suction clarifier into an existing concrete clarifier tank. "The existing clarifier arm was modified to suit a retrofit, without the need to cut through the floor of the tank to lay new pipe, which would have been a very expensive and high-risk solution," said CST Wastewater Solutions managing director Michael Bambridge.
