Impulse technology is a web consolidation technique in which water is removed from a wet paper web by the combined action of mechanical pressure and intense heat. It was originally thought that on exposure to a high temperature in the first part of the press nip, steam would be formed, which would then displace water into the felt. Experimental work at STFI, however, has shown that this is not the case but rather that very hot water forms in the first part of the nip, which flashes off and displaces liquid water when the nip pressure is relieved. Different paper grades have different manufacturing and end user requirements: the objective of this paper is to show that impulse technology can be successfully applied in the production of both paper and paperboard.
