IMPACT OF THE 2019/20 BUSHFIRE SEASON ON THE FOREST INDUSTRY

It is hard to determine the extent of the damage to the Australian forest estate, both multiple use native forests and the plantation estate so soon after the catastrophic 2019-20 bushfire season. Data collection and impact reporting is still underway, and this process will take some time. It is certain however, that the fires will impact many segments of the forest industry value chain, and the livelihoods supported by the forest industry sector. Australia's forest industries directly employ 80,000 people across the value chain while a further 100,000 are employed indirectly. The many businesses across the Australian Forest industry supply chain, including the Australian pulp and paper sector, contributes over $23 billion in economic turnover each year.
