Costco is selling coffins. I kid you not. The retailing giant announced last month that it will test-market a line of steel caskets in two of its Chicago-area stores. Seems the market for funeral-related items has been underserved at the warehouse retail level and Costco aims to fill that gap. Think about this. Perhaps your initial reaction is like mine, which was one of mild amusement and disbelief. After all, picking up a coffin for Uncle Henry while you're out shopping for tortilla chips and DVDs is at least a little weird. For that matter, making plans for your own final resting place is important—but at Costco? I always thought people did that kind of thing in tastefully appointed offices with professionals who wear suits and know about such matters.
