Performance Evaluation of Wireless Application Protocol for Reliable Connection-Oriented Services

Wireless application protocol (WAP) has been drawing a lot of attention recently, as it provides a standard environment for wireless mobile communications. To keep pace with the fast growing wireless applications and networks, WAP has been evolving through several versions (1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.2.1, and 2.0 at present). In this paper, an analytical framework is developed for studying the performance of WAP 1.x and WAP 2.0 over wireless fading channel. To reduce the complexity of analysis, a Markov channel model is used to approximate the error process of the wireless fading channel at the packet level, and then Markov analysis tools are used to evaluate the transfer time and throughput performance of the reliable connection-oriented services. Simulation results are given to validate the analytical results. It is shown that WAP 1.x performs better in a bursty-error environment than in a random-error environment. On the contrary, WAP 2.0 performs poorer in the bursty-etror environment than in the random-error environment. Also, it is found that the performance of WAP 1.x is sensitive to channel delay and degrades dramatically in a bursty-error environment.
