In today's world, information is power and businesses' most valuable asset. The digital networked economy is leading to converging global networks and improved efficiency and profitability. With ubiquitous connectivity and access, however, comes an increasing duty to act with corporate and social responsibility. As a result, compliance is a mounting burden on organizations in every sector. From finance to pharmaceuticals, from manufacturing to media and beyond, in both the private and the public sectors, organizations across the globe are finding themselves faced with an increasingly daunting array of legislation and regulation. Whether to combat corporate fraud and money laundering, safeguard customers or citizens, protect employees or tackle anticompetitive practices, the burden of compliance is growing, and so too are the penalties for noncompliance. It is a major challenge for businesses even to identify exactly what their particular compliance requirements are, let alone devise a strategy for addressing them. Moreover, data storage is no longer just a matter of retention for internal use. Now regulations stipulate that some data must be kept for certain time periods and, in certain cases, should be available within just 24 hours. Therefore, storage solutions must address how data is kept, protected, shared, and retrieved.
