摘要

The continuously growing popularity of video services and Internet-based applications is fueling demand for higher data rates in access networks. Gigabit passive optical networks (GPONs) are viewed as the next-generation networks that will resolve the major bandwidth bottleneck that currently exists in access networks. However, there are many challenges associated with the design and deployment of these networks. This paper examines the challenges associated with GPONs and how they can be addressed. The focus will be on the physical layer for the optical data link and video overlay.
