Digital rights management (DRM) is based on technology that enables valuable electronic media content distribution while preserving copyright owners' rights and revenues. DRM associates usage rules or rights for the content, and a well-designed DRM system will use security techniques to preserve the rights while protecting content during distribution. Usage rules can be as simple as restricting copying or allowing only a single copy to be made. Today's media systems and networks require more complicated DRM systems that allow content rights information exchange between devices such as set-top boxes (STBs), personal computers (PCs), and cellular phones.
