FTTx Applications and Benefits

The fixed-line network operators' business model is facing fierce competition. A promising strategy is to launch tripleplay services and convert to an IP/Ethernet-based network with flexible service platforms to face up to these challenges. At the same time, existing services with good revenue should be maintained as far as possible and the associated operating costs should be reduced. This is only possible if traditional services are transferred to the new IP/Ethernet-based network, which is the only way of avoiding the costly parallel operation of networks. In this case, particular focus is placed on the access network, since traditional services must be migrated and the length of the access line must be reduced. In this way significant bandwidths for new services and business customer applications (e.g., LAN-LAN bridging, IP-VPNs) can be provided. FTTx architectures are proving to be a very promising strategy for the future.
