The Grand Scheme beyond Femtocells: Smart Distributed WBB Networks

Femtocells have advanced into the market as a way to extend coverage and offload capacity of third generation (3G) networks. This is a method of distributing the signaling and bandwidth load to local-area networks (LANs), enhancing building penetration that is currently limited by 3G wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) technology and network architecture.rnFemtocells have little ability to become self-organized or perform network management functions. Worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) and long-term evolution (LTE), on the other hand, are based on highly adaptive orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) air interfaces and Internet protocol (IP) communications that enable architecting of self-configured and distributed networks.
