Mobile Positioning and Location Services: Statuses and Trends for Next-Generation Wireless Systems

This paper is concerned with the recent activities, current status, and future potential and trends of positioning technologies and location services (LCSs). Available positioning techniques are examined and compared with regard to a number of aspects such as quality of service (QoS), implementation features, and accuracy. An overview of standardization in different networks such as Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is provided along with interworking aspects among different systems (e.g., UMTS, wireless local-area networks [WLANs]). The regulatory aspects and the differences between the United States and Europe for emergency services are discussed. The issue is further explored by listing areas where positioning could be applied for next-generation wireless systems.
