The exact date is forgotten, but it was about 4 pm one Friday in 1958 that the modern personal air sam- pler was conceived. Wireless World was in those days essential reading for the experimenter in physics and many branches of engineering, and Jerry Sherwood was accustomed to include it in his end-of-the-week review of the latest publications. That week's issue included am advertisement for miniature, constant- speed motors, and Jerry saw the possibilities. Per- sonal sampling had been done before World-War Ⅱ by Ken Goodall(Burdett, 1998)by hanging a thermal precipitator round the operative's neck, but under- standably this technique had never caught on.
