Low-Cost Fluorimetric Determination of Radicals Based on Fluorogenic Dimerization of the Natural Phenol Sesamol

A novel fluorimetric method for determining radicalsnusing the natural phenol sesamol as a fluorogenic reagentnis reported. In this assay, sesamol was reacted withnaqueous radicals to yield one isomer of a sesamol dimernexclusively. The dimer emitted purple fluorescence nearn400 nm around neutral pH, where it assumed thenmonoanionic form. This method was applied to thenstraightforward detection of radical nitric oxide (NO).nThe ready availability of sesamol should enable rapidnimplementation of applications utilizing this new assay,nparticularly in high-throughput analysis or screening.
