Deming Lecture Focused on Progression of Statistical Ideas

Douglas C. Montgomery, Regents Professor of Industrial Engineering and Statistics at Arizona State University, presented the Deming Lecture at the 2007 Joint Statistical Meetings. His presentation was titled "A Modern Framework for Enterprise Excellence." In giving his lecture, Montgomery reviewed the development of the use of statistics to understand and reduce variation in industrial operations. He traced the progression of statistical ideas from Walter Shewhart's contributions in the 1920s to the current use of Six Sigma methods. He pointed out that most of the effort has been directed toward manufacturing processes, leaving many opportunities available in service and transactional operations. Several examples were given of the corrupting influence, and resulting cost, of variation. The importance of proper design was stressed in product development from innovation to introduction, and the use of designed experiments and response surface methods was highlighted.
