Quintiles recently selected Suraj Prakash Anand from North Carolina State University and Juan Jia from the University of California at Los Angeles as recipients of its 2008 scholarship. Each will receive $5,000. Quintiles offers the annual scholarship to students who demonstrate great potential for leadership in the statistics/ biostatistics field. Anand is a PhD student in statistics who has a 3.98 GPA and has been working as a graduate industrial trainee in clinical pharmacology and statistical sciences at GlaxoSmithKline Research and Development. He also holds a master's degree in statistics. Previously, Anand won the Young Researcher Award at the International Conference on Advances in Interdisciplinary Statistics and Combinatorics. Juan Jia is a PhD student in the biostatistics program who maintains a 3.9 GPA. She also received her master's in biostatistics from UCLA. Juan has worked as a graduate student researcher in the areas of cancer, nursing, and ophthalmology and recently won the Dean's Outstanding Student Award.
