This year marked the 25th anniversary of the Don B. Owen Award, begun in 1983 to honor the contributions of Owen to the profession: excellence in research, contributions to editorial activities, and service to the statistical community. To mark the occasion, the award's first recipient-Robert L. Mason of the Southwest Research Institute-presented an honorific plaque to N. "Bala" Balakrishnan, professor of statistics at McMasters University in Canada. Balakrishnan has emerged as one of the premier scholars in statistics over the past decade. He has a multitude of publications, the sum of which is now measured in the hundreds. In addition to journal articles, he has authored or coauthored 20 volumes in statistics, including many in specialized areas within order statistics and others in widely read volumes, such as Continuous Univariate Distributions, Volumes I and II, and Discrete Multivariate Distributions, with Norman Johnson and Samuel Kotz.
