G.I. Jeff. Davis graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1828. In November 1845, he was elected to Congress, but resigned in 1846 to fight in the Mexican War. Under the command of General Zachary Taylor, his former father-in-law, Davis saw action at Monterey and later, Buena Vista-where, influenced by the terrain, he aligned his men into an unconventional V-formation. The Mexican cavalry obligingly rode into the "V" and came under heavy fire from all sides. Davis went home to a military hero's welcome in 1847, with a foot injury and the belief that he had a touch of military genius.
