If not for his Southern-born wife, Philadelphia native John C. Pemberton likely would have fought for the Union in the war. After graduating 25th in the 50-man West Point Class of 1837, the young officer served in the Second Seminole War, helped to round up and relocate North Carolina Cherokees and took part in Maine's bloodless "Aroostook War." He then returned to Florida and the seemingly endless troubles with the Seminoles, followed by service at a succession of Army posts and service in the Mexican War.
