Swashbuckling pirates prowling the bounding main for fame and booty have long been a staple plot for Hollywood adventure movies. So it's a bit surprising that naval action in the Civil War has been the subject of only one major studio release to date.rnRepublic Pictures, a veritable B-movie factory, entrusted actor Lew Ayres (better known for portraying the lead in 1938's Young Dr. Kildare and a 1948 Academy Award Best Actor nominee for Johnny Belinda) with a miniscule budget to make Hearts in Bondage. It would be Ayres' directing debut. (Ayres now seems a strange choice to direct a war picture; he would later claim conscientious objector status during World War II.)
