Opposing forces in the Gettysburg casino fight continued to hammer each other at a two-day public hearing in early September. More than 250 people spoke out at the event. Calling the idea of gambling within a half-mile of the Gettysburg National Military Park "a national disgrace," the American Legion joined the ranks of those against a proposed casino on the fringe of the 6,000-acre battlefield. "Lincoln recognized then that it was beyond the power of men and women to consecrate this land any more than had already been done by the brave men who struggled there. Surely, [neither] he nor anyone else envisioned that someday this cemetery would be proposed as the site for a gambling hall," said the American Legion's National Commander Clarence E. Hill.
