Private Matthew Raspberry of the 15th Mississippi slumped forward against the stone wall. Then another soldier sprawled face down, and Lt. Col. James Binford realized his troops were being shot in the back. The Federals had broken through the Confederate line, putting the Mississippians in a crossfire.
