Unit histories, such as the one James S. Pula wrote about the 26th Wisconsin in 2014, have long been a popular genre for Civil War audiences. Pula's research on the 26th Wisconsin opened a vital door for him regarding the units and personalities of the 11th Corps, which he explores in these two books, published a year apart.The 11th Corps became ignominiously known as the "Flying Dutchmen" for being victimized by Stonewall Jackson's Flank Attack at Chancellorsville in May 1863. Pula has plumbed the documentary record and uncovered evidence that several attempts were made to warn those in the Union chain of command that Rebel forces were concentrating in the Wilderness and that the 11th Corps' flank was indeed "hanging in the air." Met with ridicule, those warnings were largely ignored.
