Recent USPS Standard Means Implementing Stricter Mailing Requirements

Implementation of the Move Update standards in January has opened utilities up to the possibility of additional postal fees never before assessed. The recently launched version of the Move Update by the US Postal Service (USPS) not only requires utilities and other companies to update customer and member addresses kept on file within 95 days immediately preceding a mailing, but also now assesses a fine on those mailings deemed noncompli-ant. (Move Update affects Standard or First Class mail sent at a discounted rate.) Adaptations of the Move Update have occurred over the years, but additional charges were never cited on utilities and other organizations failing to comply-until now. Although at first glance the mandate seems only to be a penalty for mailers, reducing the amount of undeliverable mail in the mailstream will actually prove beneficial to all parties involved.
