Thinking Outside the Waterworks: Transitioning to a Decentralized Water System Model

The demanding problems facing water and waste-water utilities result from an unprecedented convergence of disruptive trends. Stressed water resources, growing long-term demand, aging infrastructure, constrained funding, and new treatment technologies are challenging utility managers, regulators, and designers. We are beginning to see that the conventional approach of centralized, "once-through" water infrastructure, which served us well for centuries, will not meet these challenges alone.
