Throughout many parts of North America, irrigation demand is the single largest end use of water in the urban sector. Irrigation demands in California typically account for 50% or more of the total water used in many homes and businesses (DeOreo et al, 2008; Mayer et al, 1999). Improving irrigation efficiency may be the single most important goal for water conservation professionals in the coming years. In support of this objective, the California Department of Water Resources (CDWR) funded two large-scale regional efforts to effect urban irrigation efficiency and reduce runoff through the installation of smart controllers.
