Taking a Look at DBPs

Ever since the first application of chlorine in Belgium in 1902, disinfection has been a dynamic process-one that has evolved in accordance with need and in concert with technological advances. It has been classified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as one of mankind's greatest achievements, dropping the incidence of typhoid fever from 100 cases/100,000 people in 1900 to 0.1 cases/100,000 people in 2006. Because of its life-saving properties, however, disinfection remains a critical barrier in the protection of public health, even as new challenges such as the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) are addressed.
