Arup K. SenGupta, Rossin Professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Lehigh University and an AWWA member for more than 25 years, received the Silicon Valley's 2012 Intel Environmental Award for his technological innovations in the water area benefiting humanity. SenGupta was specifically recognized for his invention of the first reusable arsenic-selective adsorbent that has provided arsenic-safe water to more than one million people in the developing and developed world and which has created jobs in impoverished regions. The prize money was donated to a charitable foundation that SenGupta created with his students to address water issues in the developing world.
